A fantastic international selection of red wines made from the Syrah or more commonly known Shiraz grape variety. The diversity of this selection truly demonstrates the different styles that this noble variety is capable of.
'Shiraz' is the better-known and more widely used Australian name for the Syrah grape. Because Australian Shiraz has been so successful in European markets, the word 'Shiraz' has been used on wine labels for Syrah grown all over the world. Although the Shiraz and Syrah grapes are identical, the resulting red wines are very different. Australian Shiraz, with its almost port-like concentraton, tastes sweeter and riper, and more suggestive of chocolate than the pepper and spices of Syrah from the Rhône. Its soft, full-bodied, dark and dense qualities make this a wine very well suited to long-term oak maturation, perhaps even in new oak when the grapes are very ripe.
